Update: 27 October 2026 — Tanjung Embang identified as likely location

The Star reported on 26 October that Sarawak Premier Abang Johari said the proposed AI and data-centre investment in the state would likely be located in Tanjung Embang. He did not name the investor in those remarks. Read the follow-up report.

This adds location context to the earlier report. It does not confirm a final site decision, financing, a project award or that the entire reported US$50 billion would be invested in Sarawak. The figure refers to the wider Malaysia proposal described by the prime minister. Local suppliers should wait for formal participation or procurement information before treating this as an available contract opportunity.

Reviewed on 26 October 2026. Anwar’s remarks were made on 24 October; the framework agreement was announced on 8 October.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said SoftBank Group’s Masayoshi Son had identified Kuching in Sarawak and locations in Peninsular Malaysia for a proposed US$50 billion investment involving artificial intelligence, new technology and data centres. Bloomberg’s report, carried by The Star on 26 October, attributes the information to Anwar’s account of a videoconference with Son. Read the report.

The report said SoftBank representatives had not immediately responded to a request for comment. The amount should therefore be described as a reported proposal attributed to the prime minister, rather than money already committed or spent.

What SoftBank has confirmed

On 8 October, SoftBank, Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) announced a framework agreement to explore AI and digital infrastructure development in Sarawak. Masayoshi Son was among the signatories. Read the official announcement.

The parties plan to develop a phased roadmap and explore AI computing and services, advanced technology, robotics, and local workforce and community development. SoftBank identifies its technology ecosystem, Grab’s regional digital capabilities, and PETROS’s energy and infrastructure experience as complementary contributions.

The announcement describes Sarawak’s potential to support Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional AI and digital infrastructure hub. It does not state a US$50 billion investment commitment.

A framework is an early step

SoftBank’s announcement explicitly says the framework does not oblige the companies to enter definitive agreements or implement the project. It identifies financing, approvals, land, reliable power, connectivity and customer demand among the uncertainties.

These distinctions matter when interpreting the latest headline. The earlier Sarawak agreement provides confirmed context, but the sources reviewed do not establish that it and the reported US$50 billion proposal have identical scope or financing.

What Malaysian businesses should watch

In AIO’s view, the useful next signals are definitive agreements, confirmed locations, financing arrangements, implementation timelines and clearly described opportunities for local participation.

Potential infrastructure development may create interest in skills and supplier capabilities. Specific contracts, jobs or benefits for SMEs should not be assumed before details are announced.

For businesses considering their own AI adoption, this story is a reason to follow the ecosystem while keeping practical plans focused on current needs. Start with a clear workflow, suitable data, accountable people and a measurable result.
